QUEEN CITY ACTORS STUDIO 12-WEEK CYCLE BREAKDOWN

 

All sessions consist of one-on-one training, coaching, feedback and mentoring with instructor, Nathan Shelton, as well as studio peer feedback.  Regular assessments of in-class work and growth is provided weekly for student’s personal advancement.  Actors in studio must work outside of class on many assignments including, but not limited to, monologue and scene rehearsal and preparation.  It is the goal of this ongoing studio class to instill the necessary tools, work ethic, and confidence to go into any audition for film, television, or theatre as a seasoned and professional actor. 

 

BLOCK ONE: EXPLORATION OF CHARACTER CREATION & DEVELOPMENT

 

WEEK ONE: CURRENT PERSONAL ASSESSMENT & GOALS FOR GROWTH IN CYCLE

  • EXPLORATION OF TRUTH IN PERFORMANCE IN REGARDS TO MULTIPLE MEDIUMS (TV/FILM/THEATRE) & GENRES (COMEDY, DRAMA, PERIOD STYLES, ETC.)

  • IDENTIFYING “TYPE” & HOW TO MANIPULATE EXPECTATIONS AROUND IT

  • CREATION/MAINTENANCE OF THE “ACTOR’S TOOLBOX”

  • INDIVIDUAL & GROUP GROWTH GOAL SETTING FOR CYCLE

 

WEEK TWO: TEXT AND SUBTEXT ANALYSIS- CREATING BOLDER CHOICES

  • QUICK SCRIPT/SCENE BREAKDOWN TECHNIQUES FOR AUDITIONING

  • UNDERSTANDING STORY STRUCTURE & BUILDING A 3-DIMENSIONAL CHARACTER WITHIN A SCRIPTED WORLD

    • IDENTIFYING GOALS AND TACTICS

    • UNDERSTANDING CHARACTER WITH AN UNBIASED EYE & LIVING “IN THE CHARACTER’S SHOES”

    • FINDING THE HUMOR

    • PLAYING THE OPPOSITE

    • DISCOVERING THE “PINCHES & OUCHES”

    • BACKING CHARACTER INTO A WALL: “UPPING THE STAKES”

WEEK THREE: IMAGINATION EXPLORATION FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • EXPLORATION OF DYNAMICS IN PERFORMANCE: TONE, RHYTHM, REPETITION

  • EMOTIONAL AVAILABILITY & CONNECTION TO PHYSICAL ACTION

  • BALANCING FEELING AND THINKING IN PERFORMANCE

 

WEEK FOUR: IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUES FOR ACTORS

  • THINKING ON YOUR FEET

  • PUSHING PAST BOUNDARIES WITHIN SCRIPTED PARAMETERS

  • BEING OPEN AND AVAILABLE TO OTHER ACTORS IN PERFORMANCE
